Rendez-vous des Enseignants at Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum
On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, Monaco's Oceanographic Museum welcomed some fifty teachers from the Académie de Nice.
Organized each year by the Museum’s Activities Department, with the participation of the Délégation Académique à l’éducation Artistique et Culturelle (DAAC), this event enables teachers to find out about the resources and educational tools made available to them by the Institut Océanographique – Fondation Albert1er, Prince de Monaco.
Accompanied by Museum staff, participants were able to discover the various workshops available for school group visits.
On the program was a renewed offer, including the exciting “Coral Trail”, as well as information on the “Explorer and Citizen of the Sea” scheme, aimed at secondary schools.
Gathered by Laurence Bonnefond, the DAAC’s project manager for scientific culture, Tiziana Caporale, Head of the Monaco Oceanographic Museum’s Events Department, and Didier Théron, Mediation Manager for the Société des Explorations de Monaco, the teachers discussed their various annual class projects relating to the study and discovery of the Ocean, its preservation and sustainable management.
They expressed their needs and expectations, and the aim of the meeting was to provide them with relevant tools for carrying out their respective projects.
Among the new activities on offer are three main themes: underwater acoustics and marine mammals, coral, and endangered species and their impact on biodiversity.
At the heart of Monaco Explorations
These three topics were at the heart of missions led or supported by Explorations de Monaco between 2017 and 2020.
They will enable teachers to introduce students to the scientific approach, explain the importance of research and sustainability sciences in relation to current societal issues, and discover what goes on behind the scenes of an exploration mission and the different stages of fundamental research. These are all objectives and educational proposals included in the “Explorer and Citizen of the Seas” scheme, which is a great challenge in terms of education in eco-citizenship and scientific culture.
A wide range of resources
Interested teachers will be able to choose a theme and take advantage of the many resources available, such as image catalogs, educational booklets for each grade level, easier contact with the researchers involved in Monaco’s Explorations missions, and the opportunity to take part in the educational workshops offered by the Oceanographic Museum’s Events Department.
Taking part in these workshops during a visit to the Museum couldn’t be easier!
Teachers can now fill in an online reservation form, directly managed by the Museum’s teams, who will make all the necessary contacts with the relevant referents.
A number of teachers present at the October 14 information meeting have already expressed their interest and enthusiasm, particularly for the new Immersion interactive exhibition, which offers everyone the chance to dive into the heart of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
