S.A. Agulhas II: second stopover in Reunion
Two days in Le Port, Reunion Island
One sunset and one sunrise later after Mauritius, the S.A. Agulhas II arrived in the city of Le Port in Reunion on 13 October. The presence of the ship in the city of Le Port aroused a lot of interest. This stopover enabled the Monaco Explorations team to welcome on board journalists and personalities from Reunion, school groups and associations throughout the afternoon of 13 October.
S.A. Agulhas II : open doors
After the scientific equipment was loaded in the morning, the day continued with the reception of a dozen general journalists from Reunion Island. After a presentation of the expedition and a few exchanges, Monaco Exploration team welcomed more than 150 temporary passengers for visits of the boat with the help of the crew: the Best Run association, the Sciences Réunion association, the Auteuil apprentices, the maritime apprenticeship school (EAM), a delegation from the Fédération Nationale du Mérite Maritime, the Léon le Pervenche vocational school, the Lucet Langenier college and the Morin college.

Intense activity during the afternoon of 13 October 2022 on board the S.A. Agulhas II, during its stopover in La Réunion.
A busy afternoon
Two classes of High School from the Lucet Langenier and Morin middle schools are participating this year in the Oceanographic Institute’s Oceano for All competition. In addition to the visit to the boat, they benefited from an activity included in the educational projects developed by their teachers, Mr and Mrs Delebarre; the Adopt a float activity, proposed by Hervé Claustres, Thomas Jessin and Fabrizzio d’Ortenzio from the BGC Argo team; as well as a workshop on plastics led by Gwennaïs Furstemberg and Vyctoria Marillac, the two scientists from the BestRun association in charge of leading the Madcaps project on the study of micro-plastics during the mission.
Reception on board
An official reception took place at the end of the afternoon in the presence of some thirty personalities from Reunion involved in the management of the maritime environment, conservation, awareness-raising or education. Among them, Mr Charles Giusti, Prefect of the TAAF, Mrs Béatrice Sigismeau, Vice-President of the Departmental Council, Eric Mévélec, Director of the Sea, and Mrs Chantal Manès-Bonisseau, Rector of the Reunion Academy.

Embarkation for immediate departure
During the day, all the crew and the embarkers from Cape Town and Mauritius were joined on board by about fifty people for a departure towards Aldbra at the end of the day the following day: 20 students from the on-board school supervised by Fabien Lombard, as well as numerous scientists, including researchers from the GECOS programme, Jérôme Bourjea and Kentin Schull from IFREMER, Stéphane Ciccione from Kélonia, photographers Filip and Zuzana Kulisev, artist Rémi Leroy and video artist Sylvain Péroumal.
